Bakelite (sometimes spelled Baekelite) was the first plastic made from synthetic components. It is a thermosetting resin, developed by the Belgian-American chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York. Bakelite was patented on December 7, 1909. The creation of a synthetic plastic was revolutionary for its electrical non-conductivity and heat-resistant properties in electrical insulators, radio and telephone casings and such diverse products as kitchenware, jewellery, pipe stems, children’s toys, and firearms.
Jewellery, and other designer objects made from Bakelite appeared at the 1925 Paris exhibition from which Art Deco got its name. The motifs of Art Deco design were expressed in the new plastics among the interiors created by the best artists and designers in each country.
